Special Religious Development
SPRED (Special Religious Development) is a catechetical program for persons with physical, mental and/or emotional challenges.
The program began in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1960 and is now offered by 12 dioceses in the United States and 16 others around the world.
The Diocese of Portland is among those participating. Currently, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Fairfield; Sacred Heart / St. Dominic, Portland; St. Anne, Gorham; St. Bartholomew, Cape Elizabeth; St. Christopher, York; St. Joseph, Lewiston; and St. Maximilian Kolbe, Scarborough offer SPRED programs.
The SPRED program in the Portland Diocese is supported by the Parish Inclusion Ministry of Catholic Charities Maine. This is a resource to parishes in helping create and nurture caring Church communities where people of all abilities can participate.
